Upper Arm Fat - How to Get Rid of Upper Arm Fat Without Getting Flappy Upper Arms

Flabby upper arms are a nuisance that many women have to deal with as they get older. Not only are they hard to hide, they are also hard to get rid of. You might know of someone (or are someone) who's tried dealing with the problem themself. Without consulting a professional or a doctor, they decided to do some exercise and although they did lose weight, for some reason the "flapping" got worse because the upper arm lost definition and the skin became saggier. Why does this happen and is it possible to lose upper arm fat and increase, if not maintain, definition at the same time?

The good news is that it is possible. Let's first explore this phenomenon to figure out why this happens. Say that you consult a personal trainer to help you get rid of fat around your upper arms. They set you to work with some cardio-based exercises that are focused at burning fat. Over the next few weeks you weigh yourself and, to your delight, you find that the pounds and kilos are dropping off. But there's a problem. Your upper arms are smaller due to the fat loss but, they appear to be baggier, if anything. You ask your trainer why this is and they reply with, "well, you wanted to get rid of arm fat, not shape and sculpt your upper arm!"

Rylan Duggan, owner of Adonis Fitness, personal trainer and self-proclaimed "Problem Part Expert" residing in British Columbia, Canada says this: "Losing body fat is simply not enough, you need to tone and define the muscle that lies underneath the fat. Failure to do this and you will find yourself with arms that (although slimmer), will flap even more than they once did." (Pg 14) The exercises that you do to have to be two-fold: they have to not only get rid of arm fat, but they also have to build muscle. Of course, the obvious concern women have with this is "building too much muscle". "Women simply do not have the hormones to build big and bulky muscles; it defies nature. The monstrosities you see on stage at women's body-building competitions are often injecting male hormones, and taking their training to extremes by lifting weights up to three or four hours a day," says Duggan.

If you're a beginner, your ideal workout for the first week to sculpt your upper arms to perfection should start like this:

1. 16-18 minute cardio session: This can be any form of cardio that you like, ie. running, cycling, rowing. Spend two minutes "warming up" by doing the exercise at a leisurely pace. Spend the next 12 minutes working at a consistent pace which you can manage without having to stop or slow down. Then for the remaining 4 minutes, drop back down to the "warm up" pace. Do this 3-4 times a week. (top of Pg 20)

2. strength training session: a collection of 6-7 body weight, dumbbell and resistant band exercises such as deadlifts with dumbbells (Pg 33) , benchdips (Pg 35) and kneeling tubing rows (Pg 37), done in a continuous circuit with a two minute rest at the end and repeated for a second set. Done 3-4 times a week straight after the cardio session.

Doing the cardio and strength session consecutively ensures your body burns fat as well as builds muscle to add definition to your arms.

My arms as a whole are normal in length, hence I have longer than average forearms.
